Joint Pain and Hip Arthritis Q & A
What causes joint pain?
One of the most well-known causes of joint pain is arthritis. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or reactive arthritis, you might experience chronic or acute pain in your joints.
Hip arthritis is a major reason that people often seek acupuncture. It causes joint pain that radiates around the pelvic region, the lower back, and even down the legs. Acupuncture has been shown to help physical mobility, reduce pain, and, improve overall quality of life for people suffering from hip arthritis.
Aside from arthritis, several other common causes include:
- Broken bone or dislocation. A break or dislocation in the bone, even from an old injury, can cause long-lasting joint pain.
- Sprain or strain. A sprained or strained muscle or tendon can also cause inflammation and pain in the surrounding joint.
- Tendonitis. When a tendon is inflamed, this can cause discomfort in the joint area.
To understand what causes joint pain in your particular situation and to provide the most effective treatment, Donghwan Lee and his staff will ask you general questions about your medical history and symptoms.
What happens during my visit?
Most people find acupuncture to be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.
Donghwan Lee will make preparations in a private exam room, where you will lie down on a comfortable table. You may need to remove some articles of clothing, depending on the area of the body that needs to be accessed for treatment (your comfort and privacy will be completely accounted for).
He inserts tiny, sanitary needles into specific points on the body that correspond to the area you’re experiencing pain. The needles will touch the nervous system and you will feel the sensation like electricity flows.
He then leaves you to rest, usually about 30 minutes. During this time, you may listen to music, drift off to sleep, or simply breathe and enjoy the relaxation.
How does acupuncture benefit joint pain?
While each patient is different, acupuncture can help ease joint pain by balancing the body’s energy systems (called “meridians” in Traditional Chinese Medicine). Most patients benefit from a series of treatments spread out over a few weeks or months.
In addition to acupuncture, Donghwan Lee and his team may include other healing modalities as part of your treatment, including an herbal medicine protocol customized for your needs.
With clinical experience at some of the world’s most highly regarded Traditional Chinese Medicine hospitals, Donghwan Lee will help resolve your achy joints and banish chronic pain for good.

This was my first time using acupuncture. For years I have had bouts of sciatic pain. This time it was severe for five weeks, and I was in great distress. After the first session I had significant relief immediately. After 3 sessions I’m having long-lasting relief. I’m happy I chose Dr. Lee and grateful for his skills. I am so impressed I will probably see him again and again for overall health. Also, he and his staff are very kind and courteous, and the office is clean and professional.
